Mbum, Yamba and Mfumnte are the three main ethnic groups that make up Donga Mantung Division. The Mbum people occupy the Nkambe Plateau and are believed to have migrated into the area from northeast Cameroon more than four hundred years ago, in three successive groups of Warr, Yah and Tang.
These are 3 clans and together, constitute 32 Mbum villages. Each village is administered by a chief. His Ascension to the throne was and is still exclusively for male members of the royal family. The chief upon enthronement was bestowed with all the spiritual powers, through initiation into all the secret societies of the village. This gave him the status of a divine figure with divine powers to communicate with the gods and ancestors of the land who were believed to guide him on how best to administer his people.
